Our Story
Create unique product packs with our custom packaging solutions and printing formats.
As we move towards a more sustainable future for packaging, the roles of reuse and recycling has never been more critical. To not only stay relevant, but comply with upcoming legislation in Australia businesses must look to simplify their packaging, and their on-pack messaging. This includes the use of the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) on-pack, to help consumers easily recognise how to dispose of a particular packaging item.
What is the ARL?
The Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) is an on-pack labelling scheme designed to help consumers correctly dispose of packaging and to assist brand owners and packaging manufacturers in designing recyclable packaging for end-of-life use.
The ARL logo features clear, simple instructions indicating whether a packaging component can be:
Recycled,
Conditionally Recycled (requires certain action prior to disposal),
Disposed of in the waste/landfill bin, or
Requires consumers to Check Locally to see what is available in their area.
By offering consistent and easy-to-follow guidance, the ARL logos placed on packaging play a crucial role in reducing contamination in the recycling stream and enhancing recycling rates.
Box- Recyclable: Please dispose in your recycling bin. This is recyclable
Foil- Conditionally recyclable: Follow the instructions below the symbol and place this item in your recycling bin. If you are unable to follow the instructions, please dispose in our general waste bin
Cap-Not Recyclable: Please dispose in your general waste bin. This is not recyclable
Check locally: This item may be recyclable. Use the interactive local recycling tool on arl.org.au to check for local recyclability options. If no options are available locally, you will be prompted to place the item in the general waste bin.
The Importance of the ARL for Businesses and Brands
Compliance: Adhering to ARL guidelines ensures that businesses comply with local regulations and industry standards.
Consumer Trust: Today’s consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever. Using ARL logos on packaging demonstrates a company’s commitment to sustainability, which can enhance consumer trust and loyalty.
Environmental Impact: Proper recycling is essential for reducing waste and conserving resources. By using the ARL, businesses can help ensure that their packaging is disposed of correctly, contributing to a positive environmental impact.
How to Use the ARL on your Packaging
To incorporate ARL logos into your packaging design, follow these steps:
1. Join: Register your business as part of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO).
2. Identify Packaging Components: Determine the different materials used in your packaging and put them through the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) tool available to APCO members.
3. Consult ARL Guidelines: Refer to the ARL guidelines to understand how each component should be labelled.
4. Design Integration: Work with your design team to incorporate the applicable ARL logos into your packaging design without compromising brand aesthetics.
5. Printing: Ensure that the ARL logo is printed clearly and legibly on your packaging.
